BEHIND THE PROBLEM
A preschool teacher observes 12–25 children every day. Most of what they see never gets recorded.
Every moment of play, conflict resolution and emotional expression contains valuable information about a child's development. But observation is only half the work, recording it is where the process breaks down.

The problem is identified. The willingness exists. But the solution doesn't.
What wasn't working
The process breaks at exactly the moments that matter most.
I built a journey map of the teacher's current registration process across five phases. Two critical frustration peaks emerged:

The problem couldn't be solved by importing an existing solution. A new one had to be designed.

The thinking behind the design
Three principles that guided every single decision.
Alignment with the National Curriculum
The four development dimensions from Peru's National Curriculum: cognitive, socio-emotional, motor and communicative are the central tagging system of the entire tool. This guarantees pedagogical relevance and makes the output directly usable in professional contexts.
Free registration over forms
Teachers don't check boxes, they write in their own language and the AI structures it afterward. This respects how the teacher already thinks and observes, removing the translation step that causes friction.
A notebook, not a dashboard
The visual architecture was built around the familiar concept of a notebook, warm and intuitive, rather than a corporate interface full of metrics. The teacher recognizes the logic of use from the very first moment.

The most valuable finding
Two teachers noticed that the AI analysis didn't always correspond to their observation. This qualitative finding converged with the only point rated as "difficult" in the survey and became the most important improvement identified.
Rather than a weakness, this demonstrates the value of testing with real users: it allowed detection of the most critical improvement before any development. The iteration materialized in a new system prompt that reinforces coherence with the curriculum's development dimensions.
What I built

What I'd do differently
What this project taught me about designing with rigor.
Recognizing limitations strengthens a project, it doesn't weaken it.
The AI coherence finding could have been hidden or minimized. Instead, it became the most important iteration of the entire project. Showing that you can identify and act on negative findings is what separates rigorous design from surface-level execution.
What I learned
A design system isn't just aesthetics, it reduces cognitive load and is decisive in adoption by users with low technological familiarity. A rigorous methodological sequence, where each phase is grounded in the evidence of the previous one, enables evidence-based decisions rather than intuitive ones.
